Rise of the Planet of the Apes battled comedy juggernauts Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds in The Change-Up while fighting off Cowboys & Aliens to dominate the box office. Even though The Smurfs were nipping at its heels, the movie came out on top. After a decade away from the screen, the apes still got it!
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was last week’s box office frontrunner and boy, did it deliver! The prequel in the long-running sci-fi franchise debuted in the top spot with $54 million. The film was powered by an amazing motion-capture performance from Andy Serkis, who was supported by Oscar nominee James Franco and Freida Pinto. Apes‘ only new competition came from the R-rated comedy The Change-Up, which, more or less, bombed.
The runners-up
Coming in at number two was The Smurfswith $21 million, followed by Cowboys & Aliensat number three with $15.7 million. The roles were reversed for these two, who duked it out last week in a tie that was ultimately broken by Aliens.
As we previously mentioned, The Change-Up underwhelmed at the box office, taking fourth place with $13.5 million. That’s pretty low, considering its cast includes Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman. Captain America: The First Avenger held steady at number five with $13 million, bringing its domestic total to $143 million.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II came in sixth place with $12.2 million, followed by Crazy, Stupid, Lovein seventh, with a close $12.1 million. The number eight spot belongs to the Justin Timberlake– Mila Kunis comedy Friends with Benefitswith $4.7 million, which is quite a drop after three weeks.
Jason Bateman’s other comedyHorrible Bosses, is still hanging in at number nine with $4.6 million and the top 10 is completed with Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which adds another $3 million to its domestic total of $344 million.
