Jimmy Kimmel‘s beloved Uncle Frank passed away Tuesday.
Uncle Frank Potenza has died. The former NYPD police officer was best known as Jimmy Kimmel’s uncle — both on his late night show and in real life.
“It is with great sadness that the staff and crew of Jimmy Kimmel Live! mourn the loss of ‘Uncle Frank’ Potenza,” ABC said in a statement. “He was beloved by his co-workers and considered an uncle to all. His kindness and humor will be missed by everyone he touched.”
Potenza, 77, became a security guard on the show after retiring from law enforcement. He was featured in several sketches on the show along with the show’s other security guard, Guillermo, including Guillermo’s Hollywood Round-Up and Uncle Frank and Aunt Chippy’s Adventures.
Kimmel confirmed his uncle’s passing on Twitter.
“Thank you for your kind words about a very kind man — my Uncle Frank — who passed away this morning,” the comedian wrote.
Fellow celebrities and fans weighed in with their sympathies and experiences with Potenza.
“RIP Uncle Frank – One of the kindest people I’ve ever met in my career. You’ll be missed sir. Your spirit will always be part of the show,” fellow comedian Dane Cook tweeted.
Kimmel’s ex, Sarah Silverman, also had kind words for Uncle Frank.
“RIP the beloved Uncle Frank. NYC cop, security guard, father to 3, husband to 1, & Uncle to everyone,” she wrote.
