Amy Winehouse remembered during the 2011 MTV VMAs

Russell Brand, Bruno Mars and Tony Bennett remember Amy Winehouse during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

MTV didn’t forget to pay tribute to Amy Winehouse during the 2011 Video Music Awards. Comedian and friend Russell Brand echoed his poignant blog post about his friend who died on July 27.

“First time I met her, she was kind of a daft, dopey person just wandering around. A little bit crazy … the first time, though, I heard Amy Winehouse sing, I thought … what is this incredible sound, like this timeless sound … the kind of voice Billie Holiday sung with, the kind of voice Elle Fitzgerald sung with. And I turn into the arena and I see Amy Winehouse singing,” he told the audience.

Mr. Katy Perry went on to remind people of the dangers of addiction.

“All of us watching know people affected by this disease and let’s remember that there is a solution for people that need it. That solution is available,” the comedian added.

Brand then introduced legendary singer Tony Bennett. Bennett collaborated with Winehouse for the song Heart and Soul. The song and accompanying video will go on sale to benefit charity on Sept. 14  – Winehouse’s birthday.

“Either you’ve got it or you haven’t got it and Amy had the whole gift, she sang beautiful,” Bennett remembered.

Bruno Mars finished up the touching tribute with a performance of her song, Valerie.
