Amanda Knox denied killing Meredith Kercher in a final plea for her freedom.
American Amanda Knox made a final plea for her freedom in an Italian courtroom today, where she is appealing her conviction in the murder of her roommate, British student Meredith Kercher.
Knox, who was convicted along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and Rudy Guede, has steadfastly denied her involvement in the murder and claims she was bullied by Italian police during her initial interrogation.
During the wrap-up of her appeal, Knox said, “People always ask who is Amanda Knox? I am the same person I was four years ago. But I have lost a friend. I have lost my faith in Italian police. I am paying with my life for something I have not done. Four years ago I didn’t know what suffering was.”
“I did not kill. I did not rape. I did not steal,” she added. “I was not there.”
“I am innocent. Raffaele is innocent,” she said.
Knox is currently sentenced to 26 years in an Italian prison for the crime. Her conviction was marred by questionable witness testimony and possibly tainted DNA evidence, as well as sloppy police handling of the crime scene and her interrogation.

The verdict in the Amanda Knox appeals case could have three outcomes: She could be completely exonerated and freed, her current sentence could be upheld, or her sentence could be increased up to and including life in prison. Italy does not have the death penalty.
A decision in the case will be publicly available between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. EST.
