Rise of the Planet of the Apes ruled theaters last summer — and now Caesar and his crew will be coming back in the sequel.
A Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel is a go, with director Rupert Wyatt and screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver signed on. One of the key players in the original movie, Andy Serkis, has also just signed a “healthy seven-figure deal” to reprise the main role of Caesar.
In case you are unfamiliar with Serkis, he is an actor best-known for his motion-capture performances in King Kong and Lord of the Rings in which he brought Gollum to life. He worked his magic playing Caesar in the original Rise of the Planet of the Apes — and will continue with his art in the sequel. In fact, Fox announced to Deadline that they will campaign for an Oscar for Serkis’ work in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Serkis is currently working with Peter Jackson on his Hobbit films and he will be promoting The Adventures of Tintin in December, a film in which he does motion-capture work and provides the voice acting for Captain Haddock.
In case you missed the first film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes tells the story of an ape who is given an experimental Alzheimer’s drug, which gives him an amazing intellect that he uses to try to take over the planet with his fellow apes. The movie is a reboot to the film franchise that began with the 1968 film Planet of the Apes starring Charlton Heston.
No word yet if James Franco and Frieda Pinto will return to the sequel and a release date is also pending. What can we expect from the sequel of Rise of the Planet of the Apes? CinemaBlend is reporting that this sequel will be the first of a new trilogy.
