Conrad Murray spent his first night in jail alone and on suicide watch after being convicted of killing Michael Jackson on Monday.
Yesterday, Conrad Murray lost at trial and was convicted of accidentally killing Michael Jackson with the sedative propofol. Murray was immediately handcuffed after the guilty verdict was delivered and remanded to an undisclosed Los Angeles County jail. Surprising Murray’s defense team, the judge decided to deny bail. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor explained his decision to the court.
“This is not a crime involving a mistake of judgment… This was a crime where the end result was the death of a human being,” Pastor said in explaining his decision to remand Murray into police custody. “That factor demonstrates rather dramatically that the public should be protected.”
The jury only deliberated for nine hours and Murray’s defense team was not shocked by the guilty verdict. Defense attorney, Ed Chernoff, spoke to CNN after Monday’s verdict and when asked if he was surprised by the verdict said, “No.”
In a separate comment to CNN, Chernoff voiced concern over the amount of time Conrad Murray could spend in jail, “What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community. That’s what we’re focusing on right now and we’ll deal with an appeal after that.” Another one of Conrad Murray’s defense attorneys, Nareg Gourjian, revealed Murray is “devastated” by the jury decision.
Conrad Murray could face up to four years in jail or receive as little as probation. Given Judge Pastor’s decision to place Murray into immediate custody, CNN’s legal experts believe Murray is likely to see a harsher sentence when he returns to court for sentencing on Nov. 29, 2011.
