Michelle Duggar: A “problem pregnancy” is no reason to stop

Are you happy to hear the Duggar family is expecting baby number 20? See what Jim Bob and Michelle have to say about the criticism they’re now facing.

The Duggars will soon have a new addition to the family, like it or not! As news of Michelle Duggar’s pregnancy spreads, the family of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting finds itself defending its family planning choices.

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, pictured here with their 19 children, their daughter-in-law, and one of their two grandchildren, spoke with People to address the criticism of their family.

On finding time for each of their children:

“We homeschool, so we are around our children day in and day out,” says Jim Bob, 46. “Because I am in real estate, I am home and can be with the children a lot. When we go to the store or run errands, we take the kids one on one and we get to spend more time individually than a lot of parents do.”

On going for baby 20 after a “problem pregnancy” in 2009:

“There are many women who have experienced preeclampsia and have gone on to have more children. That whole mind set that you stop after a problem pregnancy isn’t realistic,” Michelle continues. “You may encounter struggles along the way. You may not have a perfect pregnancy, but each child is a precious gift.”

On when to brush off the critics:

“There are a lot of good things we can learn from our critics,” Michelle Duggar says. “We really believe we are following our faith and there are sometimes going to be people who don’t agree and we aren’t going to worry about the negative things stated. We are thankful for those out there who are happy,” says Michelle, “and we are grateful for each and every gift of a child.”

In reaction to Michelle Duggar’s pregnancy celebrities have taken to Twitter. Comedian Sandra Bernhard quipped, “oh thank the lord i was beginning to worry the duggars were infertile,” while reality show veteran Adrianne Curry commented, “I believe in zero population growth. Replace yourself&that’s it. However, the Duggars seem to have replaced us all. #UnhealthyKidObsession.”
