Shakira is a singer, songwriter, dancer and now Walk of Fame honoree. The Colombian-born entertainer has broken new ground with a prestigious star on Hollywood Boulevard.
Grammy winner Shakira has been honored with the 2,454th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (no reality TV stars allowed). The singer, born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is the first Colombian artist to receive a spot on the famous street.
The 34-year-old has been performing most of her life, and had experienced great success in Latin countries before crossing over to American audiences. In 2001, she produced her English-language hit Laundry Service, which contained the singles “Whenever, Wherever,” “Objection (Tango),” and “Underneath Your Clothes.” The album brought her millions of new fans and made her a worldwide phenomenon.
According to Reuters, Shakira recently reflected on one of her earliest experiences in the U.S., which ironically involved a visit to Hollywood Blvd. “When I was seven years-old, I came to Los Angeles for the first time and I passed by the Walk of Fame with my mother,” said Shakira. “I remember that my mom told me, ‘Shaki, one day you are going to have your name on this place.'”
Over 20 years have passed since then, and Shakira hasn’t forgotten her humble roots or her Latin peers. The singer professed, “I would like to dedicate this to the Latin community in the U.S., a community that restlessly works and dreams and dreams and works everyday to make this a better country.”
Shakira’s latest album Sale el sol, has sold over two million copies worldwide and is nominated for three Latin Grammy Awards. It also features the single “Waka Waka,” which was one of the most watched music videos of 2010.
