Cops: Robert Wagner is not a suspect in Natalie Wood’s death

Robert Wagner isn’t a suspect in the death of Natalie Wood. Even though he was one of the last people to see her alive, police claim he’s not a person of interest.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office wants to know what really happened to Natalie Wood. The legendary actress tragically drowned in 1981 after partying on a yacht with then-husband Robert Wagner and close friend, Christopher Walken.

A new investigation of Wood’s death was recently launched after yacht captain Dennis Davern announced that he lied about what happened 30 years ago. Wood’s death was ruled an accidental drowning but Davern claims there’s more to the story. The former captain appeared on NBC’s The Today Show and revealed that Wagner fought with Wood before she went missing and showed little interest in finding her after she was gone.

Despite Davern’s finger-pointing, the police aren’t looking at Wagner as a suspect. According Reuters, Los Angeles County’s Lt. John Corina told reporters they’re reopening the case due to several other sources, which they feel are “substantial enough” to pursue.

Following the announcement of the new investigation, 81-year-old Wagner and his family released a statement to the press.

“Although no one in the Wagner family has heard from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department about this matter, they fully support the efforts of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and trust they will evaluate whether any new information relating to the death of Natalie Wood Wagner is valid, and that it comes from a credible source or sources other than those simply trying to profit from the 30-year anniversary of her tragic death.”

Wagner and Wood were known for their roller coaster romance. They married each other twice, first in 1957 and again in 1972. They had one daughter named Courtney, who joined their other children (from previous relationships) Katie Wagner and Natasha Gregson Wagner. After Wood’s death, Wagner married TV and film actress Jill St. John in 1990.
