Girl power! VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul airs tonight and features performances by some of our favorite ladies, including Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson.
If you want to see some amazing ladies belting out tunes (and looking fabulous doing it!), you must tune in to VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul, premiering tonight on VH1.
The show features amazing performances from Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Chaka Khan, Jessie J, Sharon Jones, Estelle, Wanda Jackson, Mavis Staples, Ledisi and Marsha Ambrosius.
What exactly makes a singer divalicious enough to be asked to be on the VH1 Diva franchise? Jennifer Hudson says it is not all about the clothes. “Oh, my God — it’s half the ingredients,” she told USA Today.
Jill Scott agrees, saying that “it has something to do with Diana Ross in Mahogany — that wonderful sense of presence.”
Hudson, showing off her newly slim figure, gushed that she was a fan of many of the divas and couldn’t pick out just one she was most excited about. “Everyone here is on my iPod. I’m the most unknown person. I feel like I’ve won a competition to be here,” she said.
The show features a tribute to Amy Winehouse, with Florence Welch singing “Back to Black” and Sharon Jones and Wanda Jackson belting out “You Know I’m No Good.”
Dolly Parton didn’t perform this year, but is a presenter and sums up her definition of what makes a woman a true diva. “I really don’t even know what a diva is. But I assume it’s a very strong woman, someone who’s confident in her musical style and knows who she is. I guess that makes me one,” she said.
