It’s the longest, most drawn-out portion of any reality competition series — the results show. So You Think You Can Dance finally realized they don’t need one. Here’s to hoping other shows will follow their lead.
It was fun at first — like 11 years ago when American Idol first started, but now the results shows of reality TV just get on our nerves.
When Nigel Lythgoe announced via Twitter that Fox was canceling So You Think You Can Dance‘s results show, we were shocked — but also relieved.
How do you format a show that thrives off of eliminating contestants when you don’t have a results show?
That is not our problem — it’s the network and Lythgoe’s problem to figure out. But Nigel Lythgoe isn’t even bothered.
He said via Twitter, “I’m certainly not mad at FOX they have supported #SYTYCD FOR 9 seasons. With the help of [Fox president of alternative entertainment] Mike Darnell I think we have some great new ideas.”
If these “great new ideas” work, it might be wise for other competition series to follow So You Think You Can Dance — it might help the ratings.
We’re looking at you, American Idol. Sure, American Idol has its fan base, but the show is notorious for their long results shows. Come on, Ryan Seacrest even coined the phrase, “We’ll find out after the break.”
Why not just do eliminations at the beginning of each show that come in from the prior week? So what if the contestants have to wait a little longer!
We’d like to hear your thoughts on this: Should all reality competition series that have separate results shows be forced to ditch them?
We know you have an opinion, so why not use it?
