We’ve tapped Luxury Reading’s book lovin’ blogger, Vera, to give us the scoop all month long on what books are worth the read. She’ll be dishing out daily book picks — and here’s pick seven.
Anyone that enjoys American historical fiction or shows like Big Love will love The Sister Wife by Diane Noble. While the book capitalizes on the popular curiosity about the polygamist lifestyle, it does so from an educational point of view, providing unbiased details about the religion’s beginnings.
Noble’s writing is clear and enjoyable, and readers will get to experience both the disappointment of those soured on the religion, and the devoutness of believers.
About The Sister Wife
Mary Rose, a wealthy young Mormon convert traveling by ship with her family from England to America, forges an unlikely romance with Gabriel MacKay. Married onboard, the newlyweds make their way to a new Mormon settlement in Illinois and are just settling in when Prophet Joseph Smith receives a revelation from God about polygamy. As one of their close friends from the voyage is suddenly widowed during anti-Mormon riots, Gabriel announces he will marry the beautiful Bronwyn and raise her baby as his own.
Mary Rose loves Bronwyn like a sister but cannot imagine sharing her husband. Assuming that the relationship will remain platonic, she agrees, and Bronwyn and Mary Rose begin to come to terms with what plural marriage truly entails. Is this really what God wants for them?
