Audiences wanted frights this weekend as the low-budget film The Devil Inside took home the big bucks, leaving Tom Cruise No. 2 and Sherlock Holmes No. 3 at the box office.
The low budget horror film, The Devil Inside, possessed January audiences with an estimated $34.5 million in ticket sales, according to The Wrap. Not bad for a crazy lady! The film is about a woman who, while seeking the truth about what happened to her mother in Italy, becomes involved in the strange art of exorcism.
It was the only new film in wide release this week and despite its Rotten Tomatoes score of a dismal seven, horror fans came out in droves.
Only a sadistic devil could beat out Tom Cruise, who for the first time in three weeks, has not landed the number one spot. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol came in second with an estimated $20.5 million at the box office. This cash cow has nothing to worry about, topping the $100 million mark nearly a week ago. The action-thriller that takes place in Europe and the Middle East is the fourth installment in the TV-series-turned-film-franchise that has everyone in Hollywood loving Mr. Cruise once again.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows enjoyed third place with $14 million according to Box Office Mojo.com. The Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. action mystery from director Guy Ritchie is the sequel to this new gritty take on the classic detective series.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, starring Daniel Craig and newcomer Rooney Mara, comes in fourth with $11.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The murder mystery based on the popular book series and Swedish film of the same name underperformed at the box office, but Sony announced Sunday that it was moving forward with a sequel, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Alvin and the Chipmunks — Chip-wrecked hung onto a top ten spot with $9.5 million, coming in fifth. The Jason Lee mixed live action and animation adventure movie starring three lovable chipmunks grossed over $100 million domestically. Not bad for those furry little friends!

Rounding out the top ten is Steven Spielberg’s War Horse at number six with $8.6 million, We Bought a Zoo coming in seventh with $8.4 million, The Adventures of Tintin at number eight with $6.6 million, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy at number nine with $5.7 and New Year’s Eve at number ten with $3.2 million.
