Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton are normally two names you don’t hear in the same sentence. Until now… These dynamic, musically amazing ladies team up to perform alongside each other in the new family comedy Joyful Noise that has even their cast members doing a double take at this iconic pair-up.
The film is about two southern women who must team up in order to win the national choir competition. Too bad they can’t agree on what music to sing.
Keke Palmer, who plays Queen Latifah’s daughter in the film, says when she told people she was working with these two legendary singers, she always got the same response. What? Seeing them together on screen is so odd it’s almost right. Why didn’t they think of this before?
“We have a lot of friction between us,” say Dolly Parton, who plays G.G. Sparrow, the richest woman in town and the one with a big opinion about what kind of music the choir should perform to win the competition. Queen Latifah agrees, they definitely butt heads. At one point in the film, the two end up wrestling in a diner. Food fight!

When G.G.’s grandson, played by Broadway musical star Jeremy Jordan, falls for Palmer’s character, sparks — and more than a bit of food — fly all over this southern town. But that’s just the beginning of seeing the fun of having these two icons on the big screen together. The music is a whole other benefit altogether.
Written and directed by Todd Graff (Bandslam, Camp), Joyful Noise releases Jan. 13 and also stars Kris Kristofferson (Blade, Planet of the Apes), Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order) and Jesse L. Martin (Puncture, Law & Order).
