Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry earned the ire of Sex and the City‘s Michael Patrick King after a biting comment about TV-to-movie film success — or lack thereof.
Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry says there will be no movie after the show wraps — but he earned a smackdown by Sex and the City producer Michael Patrick King in the process. Claws out!
Cherry started the feud when he appeared to mock the plot line of Sex and the City 2, telling reporters at the Television Critics Association tour this week, “I’m never sending these gals to Dubai. That’s all I’m saying. Sex And The City only did, I think, a total of something like 69 episodes. So I always thought the advantage for them was that they hadn’t really plumbed the depths of those characters.”
Sex and the City producer Michael Patrick King took umbrage at Cherry’s seeming diss, pointing out exactly how much cash the movie raked in despite a somewhat negative critical reception.
“I don’t think [Cherry has] ever made a feature film, so I don’t know if he knows what that entails, but the reality is my second movie made almost half a billion dollars,” King retorted.
As if to highlight the true level of his success, King added, “It’s fine. The reality is I’ve moved on from that. I’m doing a new show [2 Broke Girls]. It’s the number one comedy.”
King also said that the mere fact Cherry even mentioned the film means it made an impact.
“It doesn’t matter. Here’s what happens — you create something in the moment that you feel will be good, and then… people’s reactions to it or people referencing it years later, it’s a compliment.”
So there.
