Ricky Gervais won’t rein in jokes at Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais won’t hold anything back on Sunday at the Golden Globes. Find out what he thought of last year’s controversy — and how he’ll top it this year.

Ricky Gervais isn’t about to tone down his act to again host the Golden Globes. Last year, the British funnyman ruffled more than a few feathers when he went after “untouchable” stars like Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.

They didn’t find his jokes funny.

Television watchers even feared that he was fired from his hosting gig mid-show.

“I did every single introduction I was meant to. There just happened to be a long gap. This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for. (And who I knew had a good sense of humor),” he explained of his absence.

“Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after-show was great.”

They must have — he’s planning to fire back at celebrities even harder this year.

“I knew what I was doing — it was stand-up. I know where the gasps are going to come. I know when the laughs are going to come… I knew all that,” Gervais said during his appearance on the Ellen show, airing today. “But I didn’t think the press would [rip me for it]… I mean you usually have to kill someone to get that many column inches. They were still talking about it, so I was shocked at the reaction.”

He really didn’t find anything wrong with his jokes.

“I don’t think I was nasty. If they saw my stand-up, their heads would explode,” he joked. “People say, ‘Is there anything you shouldn’t joke about?’ I don’t think there is. I just think it depends what the joke is. I think comedy comes from either a good or a bad place, and I was just teasing them, ya know? It wasn’t a room full of wounded soldiers. These are the richest, most privileged people in the world.”

We can’t wait for Sunday.
