Singer Bruno Mars has been cleared of a felony cocaine possession charge in Las Vegas today. It looks like he dodged a “Grenade” with that one!
Pop singer Bruno Mars got his cocaine possession case dismissed today in Las Vegas after the judge said he has met the conditions of his plea deal — and basically has kept his nose clean!
Mars, whose real name is Peter Gene Hernandez, was arrested September 2010 after a bathroom attendant at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino called security because she saw him go into the bathroom stall with a bag filled with a white powdery substance.
Cops found the singer, who had been performing at the casino, in possession of 2.6 grams of cocaine. He told cops that was his first time doing drugs.
Mars pled guilty to felony possession of cocaine and the judge ordered him to pay a $2,000 fine, perform 200 hours of community service and take an online drug counseling course.
Mars didn’t attend the hearing today, however Clark County District Court Judge Jessie Walsh dismissed the case after determining he had met all the conditions of his plea deal. Mars could have faced four years in a state prison.
“Bruno earned the dismissal,” his attorney Blair Berk told reporters outside the courtroom. “He exceeded the expectations of the court.”
Mars, 26, has had a string of hits, including “Just The Way You Are,” “Grenade,” and “It Will Rain.” He won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performer last year and is nominated for six Grammy Awards this year. He is scheduled to perform at the 2012 Grammy Awards on Feb. 12.
