Oprah Winfrey’s first trip to India hasn’t gone off without a hitch. Find out why her bodyguards were arrested for protecting the talk show queen.
Oprah Winfrey might be the Queen of Media, but don’t try to get close to her if you are just a lowly reporter. Indian authorities briefly detained Oprah’s bodyguards after they got into a scuffle with journalists covering her first visit to the subcontinent.
The OWN network chief is in India to shoot footage for her show on the network, Oprah’s Next Chapter. She was filming the Hindu pilgrimage town of Mathura, about 90 miles south of Delhi, when overzealous reporters tried to get close to her. The bodyguards tried to keep them back, leading to their arrest. They were ultimately released after writing an apology letter.
Oprah was unfazed by the incident — she visited the Taj Mahal on Thursday and will visit the Jaipur Literature Festival on Friday, according to the AP.
It’s been an eventful month for the media mogul. She just left South Africa after attending the first graduation ceremony for the girls’ school she opened in Henley on Klip, located south of Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Oprah Winfrey Leadership School for Girls opened in 2007 and educates its students free of charge.
“When I’m there I’m talking from the time I get up till I go to bed, about EVERYTHING teenage girls are going through. It’s the same all over the world,” she said in July.
Now, the graduated students are heading to some of the top universities in the U.S. and Europe. Maybe her trip will inspire her to open a new school in India?
