Project Runway All Stars spotlight: April Johnston

How far will the young designer make it this season?

April Johnston from season eight of Project Runway is one of the youngest contestants on the history of the show. Her Gothic, grunge aesthetic worked to her advantage during her time on the runway, but unfortunately she failed to impress the judges on Project Runway All Stars this season.

Since appearing on Project Runway, Johnston has been keeping herself extremely busy. After the buzz created by her design from the pattern challenge on season eight, Johnston created a fabric line called April Johnston for Project Runway that is carried by Jo-Ann Fabric stores nationwide. She has also launched her own clothing company named Mangled Courtesan that is true to her love of all things Gothic. The one-of-a-kind pieces showcase her distinct style and reflect her personality. Additionally, Johnston participated in Charleston Fashion Week in 2010.

Johnston returned to the runway on this season of Project Runway All Stars to compete with fellow designers including Michael Costello, Rami Kashou and Austin Scarlett to take home the grand prize — a guest editorship at Marie Claire.

With such fierce competition, the Savannah, Georgia resident was unable to hold her own and was voted out on episode four of Project Runway All Stars following a gelato-inspired design challenge. Johnston was off to a rocky start this season with her ill-fated attempt at creating an ombre effect on beautiful red fabric with black dye for the opera design challenge. She continued to miss the mark and ultimately, was sent packing when her blueberry dress lacked enough fabric to completely cover her model’s behind or her own.

Down to nine designers remaining, who will be the last one standing? So far this season, Michael Costello seems to be on fire and Mondo Guerra and Rami Kashou keep creating beautiful garments. Tune in to Project Runway All Stars Thursday nights on Lifetime to find out who is in and who is out.
