Tonight’s the night! Smash making big debut on NBC

Smash makes its big debut Monday night. Will it be everything we wished for… and more?

The new NBC musical show Smash will make its much-anticipated debut after what seems like years of hype. Smash follows the lives of Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty) as they audition for the lead in a Marilyn Monroe musical.

The show, co-starring Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and Uma Thurman, is getting critical acclaim for its debut episode. The show gives us an inside look at the brutal audition process, but McPhee told MTV News that actually auditioning for her part on Smash wasn’t a big deal.

“It was actually one of the more simple auditions I’ve been through,” she told MTV News last week. “I auditioned, put myself on tape, flew to New York the next week, was testing for it. I waited two days for Mr. Spielberg to watch the tape and I got the part.”

We think that would be pretty intimidating — it’s Steven Spielberg, after all.

“Mr. Spielberg, when you meet him, he is not intimidating at all. He’s the most lovely, wonderful, gentle man,” she revealed.

McPhee is poised to become a mainstream star with this show, something that has eluded her since she was a finalist on American Idol. She identifies with Karen and her drive for success.

“My character, Karen, is the biggest dreamer of them all, she dreams big. Our show is about dreaming big. She has a big heart, she has a lot of drive and she’s very determined about what she wants in her career and what she wants out of it and how she’s gonna go about doing it and keeping a real strong moral code,” she told MTV. “I think she is a little green when you first meet her. She’s not quite sure how things go and how things are worked in the business, [and] she learns a lot throughout the course of the first season.”
