3 Spring craft ideas for kids

Celebrate spring by making some fun spring crafts with your kids. Look for crafts that depict things from nature — flowers, bugs, leaves and other elements.

These crafts are perfect spring activities for kids.

Ladybug rocks

Spring is here, and the ladybugs are on their way. This season, your kids will love making these bright ladybugs out of rocks. They can use them for paperweights or just for display.

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Clean the rocks with dish detergent and warm water. Let the rocks dry completely.
2. Paint the rocks with the red paint and allow them to dry for at least four hours.
3. When the paint is completely dry, place a piece of masking tape across the width of the rock about 1/3 of the way down to create a sharp line when you are painting the ladybug’s head.
4. Use black paint to paint the head. Allow the paint to dry, and then remove the tape.
5. Now you need to create a black strip down the center of the the ladybug’s back to separate the wings. For a crisp line, you can again use masking tape. This time, place masking tape on both sides, leaving about a 1/4-inch strip down the middle. Paint this stripe black. Allow the paint to dry completely, and then remove the tape.
6. Using the black marker, make three or four black dots on each of the ladybug’s wings. Your ladybug is now complete!

Watercress egg head

This craft is actually a gardening project, too. Your kids will love to watch these little egg heads grow green hair.

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Soft boil eggs for breakfast and place them in egg cups. After you are done eating the eggs, carefully wash out the shells and return them to the cups.
2. Using markers (or acrylic paints and a fine tip paintbrush), draw a funny face on each of the eggs.
3. Place two dampened cotton balls in each egg shell. Sprinkle a layer of seeds on top of the cotton.
4. Place the eggs (in the cups) into a paper bag and keep them covered for a couple days until they begin to sprout. Remove the eggs from the bag and move them to a window sill.
5. Water the eggs every day, and watch the cress grow into a funny “hairstyle.” Kids will love to give the eggs a haircut, and use the watercress in recipes.

Tissue paper flowers

Tissue paper flowers are easy to make and perfect for springtime.

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Cut tissue paper into 5×8-inch rectangles.
2. Stack 12-15 pieces of tissue paper on top of each other. You can use all the same color or mix the colors.
3. From the long side, accordion pleat the tissue paper. Then, wind one end of your stem around the middle of your pleated paper.
4. Use the scissors to trim the ends of the paper. You can make them pointed or round, depending on the shape of petals you desire.
5. Very gently separate each layer of the tissue paper pulling it toward the middle. Repeat on the other side. Now you have one flower!
6. You can use different sizes of tissue paper (and various numbers of sheets) to make your flowers large or small. Flowers can be placed in a vase or basket or used to make wreaths and other spring crafts.
