Mother’s Day 2012 is going to look a little different if Christy Turlington gets her way. The model, mother of two with husband Ed Burns, is advocating we all participate in No Mother’s Mother’s Day instead.
For Mother’s Day 2012, which falls on May 13, what Christy Turlington would ultimately appreciate more than any chocolate or flowers, is a conversation about maternal mortality — the purpose behind the 43-year-old’s philanthropy project, Every Mother Counts.

To get her message across, the model enlisted the help of some famous faces. In the video below Jennifer Connelly, Kelly Rutherford, Ann Curry, Blythe Danner, Debra Messing and Dayle Haddon and some less famous supporters explain the purpose of No Mother’s Mother’s Day.
“I had a few people that said, ‘Good. I hate this holiday and I can say I’m not participating,'” Turlington said of making the Every Mother Counts video. “Some people have a negative feeling toward it, and I think it’s because of all the commercialization.”

To take part, the public is being asked not to buy any gifts, but rather to go completely silent. No phone calls or social media status updates. Simply “disappear” to bring awareness to those who are lost worldwide during pregnancy and birth complications.
The film, posted on the cause’s Facebook page, is mostly a message to other mothers, but Turlington hopes moms will share it with their children, partners and husbands, who typically plan Mother’s Day celebrations.
“My husband directs the film for that reason,” she said. “He’s the one who takes the lead on that day.”
