Increase your awareness: May is National Celiac Awareness Month

May is National Celiac Awareness Month. Whether you’re new to a gluten-free lifestyle or not, it’s always helpful to have resources.

Are you new to celiac disease or gluten intolerance? Even if you’re not, the more tools you have to help learn about the disease and what foods and restaurants are gluten-free, the better. In honor of May being National Celiac Awareness Month, SheKnows would like to share a few guides with you from Triumph Dining.

Shopping made easier

As you may know, gluten can be found in many different foods and products, from ketchup and soy sauce to candy and seasonings. When you’re working on a recipe and you’re stumped by trying to figure out whether your favorite brand of pudding mix contains gluten, we know where you can turn for some assistance.

Make your grocery list and go

Triumph Dining has published The Essential Gluten-Free Grocery Guide, where you’ll find about 44,000 gluten-free products listed (including brand names and many major store-brands) that are found in most traditional, American grocery stores. From dairy and egg products to convenience and frozen foods to products in the baking aisle, this guide can help you with your meal planning.

The Grocery Guide is meant to be a shopping companion — you still need to remain committed to reading labels to help ensure your food and products are gluten-free. Like the Grocery Guide indicates, no matter how far food products have come in food labeling, “caution and common sense are still vital to our decision-making.” Within the guide are easy-to-follow details on how to best use it, its limitations and the importance of continued personal education.

Dining out?

Another resource published by Triumph Dining (think about keeping this in your car or bringing it along when you’re out of town) is The Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide, now in its fifth edition. All 50 states are indexed and it includes 6,5000 restaurants with gluten-free meal options. You should always personally verify the information you find in the Restaurant and Grocery Guides (think of how often restaurant menus and staff change), but these books give you a giant step in the right direction to enjoy gluten-free meals.

Celiac disease is one condition where you hold the keys to better health. Consult with your healthcare provider to become better educated about your condition, diet and personal health and well-being.
