Table runners are a great way to add some interest to your table and be able to easily change your decor without spending a lot of cash. This particular table runner will cost less than 10 bucks and can be customized in any way you see fit. Consider using different colored ribbons, different embellishments or even different fabric for the base. This table runner was meant to prepare my table for all the patriotic holidays coming our way and to pay homage to summertime picnics. Best of all — no sewing, so just about everyone can complete this project.
You’ll need:
- One long, thick strip of burlap. Use a table runner you already have to measure directly on the table you plan to put the runner; this will help you decide how long and thick to cut your piece. My piece was approximately 55 inches long and 13 inches wide.
- 4 rolls of ribbon in any color (amount may vary depending on the size of your runner)
- Jute webbing (amount may vary depending on the size of your runner)
- Lace trim (amount may vary depending on the size of your runner)
- Hot glue and glue sticks
- Scissors
Step 1:
Lay your burlap strip flat on a table or solid surface. Glue one end of the red ribbon to the end and then pull the ribbon out to the length of the burlap, cut it and glue the other end as well. The first ribbon should hang over the end of the burlap. At the end you’ll glue it down to prevent the burlap from fraying. Hot glue will soak through the burlap, so be careful not to use too much, and be careful you don’t glue the runner to whatever surface you are working on. Depending on the spacing you prefer, you may need more or less red ribbon. I used six pieces.
Step 2:
Lay the white ribbon across the runner to measure and cut slightly longer than the width of your runner. Decide on the spacing you want and continue to cut the ribbon until you’ve covered the entire length of the runner. I used 25 pieces.
Step 3:
Once you have the amount of white ribbon you need, start weaving it through the red ribbon, alternating each time. I finished weaving it through before I glued anything so I could make sure it was straight and the spacing was how I wanted. You could also glue as you go. I just put a dot of glue on each end and then glued in a few more spaces when I was completely finished.
Step 4:
Cut a piece of jute webbing and lace trim the width of your runner and glue about an inch in. Cover the edge of the burlap with glue to prevent fraying. Add the lace trim to the end of the jute webbing.
Step 5:
Lay out on your table, trim any pieces of white ribbon that were too long and glue down any pieces that are moving around. Enjoy!
