The 2012 Billboard Music Awards selected Whitney Houston as this year’s Millennium Artist. The singer, who died last February, was honored by her peers with a stirring tribute that brought the crowd to their feet.
Sunday night, Jordin Sparks made her movie mama proud. The singer, who plays Whitney Houston‘s daughter in this summer’s Sparkle, paid tribute to the icon at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards.

Sparks, John Legend and Whoopi Goldberg were all on hand to celebrate Houston’s life and career. Houston’s real-life daughter Bobbi Kristina, and sister-in-law Pat were both in attendance.
Legend took to the piano to perform Houston’s 1986 single, “The Greatest Love of All,” which was followed by Sparks’ moving rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” Her version easily rivals that of Jennifer Hudson and Glee‘sAmber Riley.

Sparks performance brought the crowd to their feet and Bobbi Kristina to tears. After accepting the Millennium Award on her mother’s behalf, she expressed how important the fans have been throughout this difficult time.
”I really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all. Not just from when it was good but when it was bad, too. Thank you for showing that much love, because she deserved it… I’m just blessed to have been in such an incredible woman’s life. There will never be another one, ever.”
