Kathie Lee is no stranger to putting her foot in her mouth, but today really took the cake. Find out what she asked guest Martin Short that gave us a really bad case of secondhand embarrassment.
Kathie Lee Gifford made a mistake while interviewing Martin Short live on the Today Show… she didn’t know his wife had died in 2010.
It sounds like NBCToday Show host Kathie Lee Gifford drank a little too much on wine Wednesday (again) — she ended up asking guest Martin Short about his longtime wife. The problem? She passed away a couple of years ago.
Awkward.
“How many years are you in love with her now?” Gifford asked Short of his wife, Nancy Dolman. She lost her battle with ovarian cancer in August 2010.
“We have been married 36 years,” Short graciously replied, though clearly caught off-guard.
“But you’re still in love!?” she continued before co-host Hoda Kotb (rightfully) took the reins and changed the subject. The comedian then clued in the clueless host to his wife’s death during a commercial break.
Gifford was obviously upset about her mistake — she was almost in tears when she apologized on-air for her questions. She added that Short told her a great piece of advice he received at his wife’s funeral.
“Just keep the conversation going,” he said.
Gifford wasn’t willing to let it go, adding to her on-air apology with a tweet after the show.
“I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family,” she wrote. “He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”
Hey, we all make mistakes, but we can’t believe that Gifford doesn’t at least prep herself before interviewing celebrities. You aren’t getting any younger, Kathie — and the mind probably isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Still, we won’t stop watching the daily train wreck that is the third hour of the Today Show — we’re always guaranteed to see or hear something that makes us go “WTF?”
