Well, this is new! Eminem released the music video to “Headlights” on Mother’s Day, and it had us feeling all sorts of feels. We didn’t expect that at all!

We always feel a wide range of emotions whilst watching Eminem videos, but they’re usually not this sentimental or meaningful. . . The ol’ Slim Shady is full of surprises!
The 41-year-old rapper has finally released the music video to “Headlights” — the fifth single off his most recent album Marshall Mathers LP 2 — which was directed by Spike Lee (no biggie!). The song is an apology to Eminem’s mother, Debbie Mathers, for his previous treatment of her and for the verbally abusive inclusion in his older singles like “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.” The music video was mostly shot from a first-person perspective, presumably from Debbie’s, and runs through a treasure trove of Eminem’s childhood photos. As you can tell, it was only too fitting to release the video on Mother’s Day.

It’s quite a change of pace from “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” which featured loving verses like, “You selfish b****; I hope you f****** burn in hell for this s***.” Eminem allegedly does not perform the angst-filled single anymore and can’t even stand hearing it on the radio. We hope penning down an apology to his mum has brought some peace of mind to the rapper.
As to the music video, we think Shady’s fans will appreciate the personal feel of it. We don’t get to see this emotive side of Eminem often, and we can’t even think of another instance of such overt repentance in his music. Those amongst us who have also suffered at the hands of a parent (or parents) can relate to the pain dispersed in the lyrics and recognize the immense difficulty of forgiveness. Eminem clearly proves that it’s never too late to let go of the anguish and move on.

We’re not going to lie, we teared up a little. This is not a hunky-dory type of song or music video; it’s just an apology. Eminem does not go off frolicking into the sunset with his mother; he simply recognizes his mistakes and acknowledges their relationship. What did you think of it? Thoughts?
