If you haven’t heard, Foxcatcher is kind of a big deal. The Bennett Miller-directed film is receiving some serious Oscar buzz at the Cannes Film Festival.

Everyone is abuzz about Bennett Miller’s directorial tour de force Foxcatcher, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night to some glowing reviews. The film — based on a true story — was received with a fiery standing ovation at the Palais des Festivals, prompting the stars, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, to lift up Miller and parade him around in a victorious gesture.

Miller previously directed Moneyball and Capote. Foxcatcher is currently in the running for the prestigious Palme d’Or award and stars Steve Carell, Channing Tatum as well as Mark Ruffalo. The film recounts the tragic story of the mentally ill John du Pont (Carell) and his Olympic wrestling ring, which entangled Mark (Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo).

The reviews
Foxcatcher is already gathering an impressive array of reviews. It currently holds a rating of 90 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, and we doubt it will dramatically change upon wider release. Critics are praising the representation of the story, the cast selection, directing, cinematography — everything! Definitely a film to watch out for.
The incredible story
The fact that this movie is based on a true story really adds a chilling element to the experience. John du Pont was a real person — a member of the influential du Pont family — who did sponsor USA Wrestling and whose erratic behaviour was not clocked in before it was too late. Of course, Mark and Dave Schultz ended up paying the price for it. It’s a very gripping story that we’re glad to see adapted for the big screen.
The stellar cast
Oh, the cast. Someone was obviously paying attention when they cast these fellas for their roles. Carell is receiving endless praise for his portrayal of du Pont, which included a prosthetic nose, nasal voice and a complete overhaul of body language. He’s barely recognizable! Tatum, despite being a surprising choice for this movie, allegedly totally pulls his weight and shows off some serious acting chops. His role as Mark Schultz is praised as the best of his career. Ruffalo holds a much smaller role but is said to deliver a very captivating performance in every one of his scenes.

Needless to say, seeing Tatum and Carell so far removed from their comfort zones is really tickling our fancy. This film is boasting all the markers of a potential Oscar winner, and we are going to support it all the way. We’ll definitely be the first in line at the movie theatre come Nov. 14. See you there?
