Queen Elizabeth II’s husband of 64 years is sent to the hospital Monday morning with a bladder infection. Her Diamond Jubilee goes on without him.
With the entire country celebrating the 60th year of his wife’s reign, Prince Phillip has been hospitalized.
The 90-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II was taken to King Edward VII Hospital in London Monday morning with a bladder infection, “as a precaution.”
“Prince Philip will remain in hospital under observation for a few days,” according to a statement by Buckingham Palace.
Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II have been married since 1947, when he was 26 and she was only 21. However, they had been corresponding since she was 13 years old.
The queen is celebrating her Diamond Jubilee this week. She came into power 60 years ago when she was only 25 years old, after the sudden death of her father.
The event hosted a concert tonight featuring Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Paul McCartney, among others. Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, were in attendance, along with Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince Harry.
“Prince Charles took the stage and encouraged concertgoers to make some noise for his father,” according to the Associated Press. “The crowd responded with a roar and chants of ‘Philip.’”
Elton John joked that the prince probably missed the concert because he doesn’t like pop music.
Prince Philip had joined his wife on Sunday for a “pageant” down the River Thames on their royal barge. He had stood in the rain for over an hour, but no one has mentioned whether that may have contributed to his infection.
“He is, understandably, disappointed about missing this evening’s Diamond Jubilee Concert and tomorrow’s engagements,” said the statement by Buckingham Palace.
The infection is being “assessed and treated” but he will miss the rest of the week’s celebrations.
The Diamond Jubilee will continue Tuesday with a processional route through London, ending at Buckingham Palace.
Prince Philip also celebrates his 91st birthday on Sunday.
