Apparently TV networks want to remake absolutely everything that was ever popular. The newest victim is Say Anything, which is being turned into a series by NBC.

Sometimes things should be left in the past… Instead of being dug up and regurgitated for several hundred episodes. It has come to our undivided attention that NBC has intentions of remaking Say Anything into a TV show and introducing the beautiful romance between Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) and Diane Court (Ione Skye) to a new generation. Lovely idea in theory, but let’s not do this again! How many movies and TV series must we remake, people?

Per E! News, NBC ordered a script for a single-camera comedy, allegedly taking place 10 years after the conclusion of Say Anything. It turns out Lloyd and Diane have broken up, but she is back in town, and Lloyd attempts to win her over yet again. Not the most original plot in the world, but we’re sure it could fly for a few seasons. It will be produced by Aaron Kaplan with writer Justin Adler.
The major concern here is that by taking a plot of a two-hour movie and blowing it out on a larger scale, NBC will really be diminishing the value of the original and is risking the ruin of a classic. We’re not sure the network will manage to maintain strong characters and an interesting plot for a reasonable stretch of time. This seems like quite a gamble.

Of course, this is not the first movie NBC is attempting to remake. The network is currently also reworking Real Genius and Problem Child. We’re not sure how we feel about all of this. These remakes — like 90210 and Melrose Place — never live up to their predecessors and end up watering down the originals in a way. What do you think?
