The American Idol alum was raised Baptist and says her faith and marriage shape her views on marriage.
A Southern girl raised Baptist in the world of country music is not the first one you’d thing would come out in support of gay marriage, but Carrie Underwood has broken out of her stereotype.
Underwood recently sat down with The Independent to talk about her beliefs, how she was raised and her relationships.
“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” she said. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”
She also goes on to say that her faith not only didn’t bar her from these beliefs, but they are what encouraged her to feel the way she does.
“Above all, God wanted us to love others,” she noted. “It’s not about setting rules, or, ‘Everyone has to be like me,’” she said in the interview. “No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”
Underwood and her husband, pro-hockey player Mike Fisher, do attend church, but it is a non-denominational church that she calls “gay friendly.”
Underwood is at the risk of losing a large part of her fanbase, as she has long been considered a Christian singer. Her song Jesus Take the Wheel was a number one hit for seven weeks in 2010.
Her album Blown Away, which came out May 1, is currently the number one album on the Billboard Top 200 album chart for the third week in a row. It knocked off Adele’s 21 its first week out.
Underwood kicks off a U.S. tour on Sept. 14.
