The end is near for Showtime‘s Weeds. This summer, the cable network will air the eighth and final season of the risqué series. It’s pulling the plug on the Mary-Louise Parker vehicle, which has been one of its most successful programs.
Showtime is cutting its ties with the veteran dramedy, Weeds. The series, which debuted in August 2005, will conclude its run after its eighth season, which begins next month.
Created by Jenji Kohan, Weeds has become a serious force on both cable and broadcast television.
The series is headlined by Mary-Louise Parker, who won a Golden Globe for her portrayal as suburban mom-turned-pot-dealer, Nancy Botwin.
Over the years, Weeds has put audiences through the wringer with plot twists and multiple cast changes. And now it’s time to say goodbye.

Showtime entertainment president David Nevins praised the series for helping elevate the network’s TV presence. “There were two shows, Weeds and Dexter, that really got Showtime taken seriously for cutting-edge original programming.”

“How they get brought home is really important. In this case, both for the sake of the two women behind the show (Kohan and Golden Globe-winning star Mary-Louise Parker) and an audience that’s really invested in the show. TV fans love nothing better than to complain about how shows end and we really want to end this one the right way.”
So how will it all end? Will the Botwins go out with a bang? Kohan says, “We wrack our brains every year for crazy cliffhangers and we’re trying to figure out how to top ourselves.”
Well, that sounds foreboding. We hope no one’s arrested or killed!
The final season of Weeds premieres July 1.
