Madagascar 3 repeats with No. 1 box office win

There’s a double take this week at the box office because things look exactly like last week — Madagascar 3 coming in first and Prometheus coming in second — despite new releases starring Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler. What’s up with the box office deja vu?

Apparently it is more fun to see animals in the wild than in a zoo. Or, that’s what audiences are telling Hollywood this weekend as Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted raked in an estimated $35.5 million in box office returns, according to The Los Angeles Times. This gives the film two weeks in a row at number one for the third installment in the animation series about New York City’s finest zoo animals desperately trying to get home.

Trailing Madagascar again this week is the sci-fi thriller Prometheus at number two with $20.2 million in box office returns. Director Ridley Scott’s search for the meaning of life takes audiences on a wild and often frightening ride through outer space, starring Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender.

Coming in third this week is the jamming musical Rock of Ages, whose all-star cast seemed worthy enough to beat a quirky zebra and an overzealous elephant. But alas, it wasn’t so. The film adaptation of the Broadway musical starring Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin grossed an estimated $15 million at the box office according to Deadline Hollywood.

The other big new release this week is Adam Sandler’s That’s My Boy, a return to the R-rated comedy. Sandler stars as an annoying father to Andy Samberg. This raunchy romp grossed an estimated $13 million.

Snow White and the Huntsman, the fantasy thriller starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, raked in $13 million bringing it in at number five this week.

Men in Black 3, starring Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Will Smith, came in sixth with an estimated $9.8 million in box office returns. Not bad for the three-quel in the series about secret agents who track down alien invaders.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 are The Avengers at number seven with $8.3 million, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at number eight with $2.3 million, Moonrise Kingdom at number nine with $2.3 million and What to Expect When You’re Expecting at number 10 with $1.3 million.
