Katy Perry is getting ready for the launch of her 3D concert film Part of Me. But in a new interview, she opens up about her past (i.e. Russell Brand) and her future (i.e. the record label she plans to launch).
Katy Perry is about to be everywhere. (Like she hasn’t been everywhere since 2008, anyway.)
The pop singer’s still coasting on the re-release of Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, which has inspired number-one singles in “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake.”
Her 3D biopic-concert movie, Part of Me, is about to reach theaters (on July 5), putting her in the same camp as Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber and U2 as artists who’ve transitioned to the silver screen with their music.
And Perry now has announced plans to give back to the music community by launching a record label.
The news drops as part of a lengthy interview Perry gave to The Hollywood Reporter, where she spoke candidly about her failed marriage to comedian Russell Brand (“There were times when what was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eyes and not my false lashes just as I’m about to go up on that ramp and sing ‘Teenage Dream,'”), her investment in the concert film and her plans for the future.
Perry, 27, said she plans to use this as-yet-unnamed label to help struggling musicians and artists get a foot in the door, as people did for her in the early stages of her career.
“When it does come to fruition, I’m going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success,” she told THR. “As people are coming to me with opportunities, I’m thinking, ‘How would I want to be treated?'”
Launching a label puts Perry in good company, as well. Other artists who’ve launched record labels to benefit other performers include Jay-Z (Roc-A-Fella Records), Jack White (Third Man Recordings) and The Rolling Stones (Rolling Stone Records).
