The actor said America wants a royal family. But when asked if he would compare his relationship with Kristen Stewart to that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, he said he “wouldn’t really go that far.”
For how many public appearances Robert Pattinson made this week, he got away with saying surprisingly little about ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart.
But a short television interview is much different than sitting down with a newspaper columnist who has all the time in the world. Pattinson was interviewed by New York Times columnist David Carr this week and revealed some shocking thoughts about the relationship.
Carr asked him what he thinks about himself and the culture of fame in America.
“I think it’s because America really wants to have a royal family,” said Pattinson, according to the Huffington Post.
He thinks America’s royal family is more based on merit than birth though.
Carr followed up on this idea, asking how Pattinson and Kristin Stewart would compare to one of Britain’s most famous modern couples.
“So if you and Kristen have trouble it’s like Charles and Di having trouble?” Carr asked, said the Huffington Post. But then he quickly added, “I wasn’t really going there, just so you know.”
The Huffington Post said that before Carr added the second comment, Pattinson was seriously considering the question. But he then agreed and said he didn’t think it was a good comparison.
“No, I wouldn’t really go that far,” Pattinson said.
(For the record, being compared to Prince Charles and Princess Diana in terms of your relationship probably isn’t a good sign.)
The numerous interviews this week, in support of the actor’s new movie, Cosmopolis, are the first (intentional) appearances Pattinson has made since he broke up with Stewart.
But the elephant in the room now may be less about the relationship and more about promotional appearances for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, which stars both Pattinson and Stewart. Neither has talked about being nervous about having to appear together, and according to Summit Entertainment, promotional plans are “full steam ahead.”
Cosmopolis will be in theaters Aug. 17, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 will be out in November.
