The swimmer won gold medals and will be appearing on Hollywood TV shows. But he seems to think that the catchphrase business is where the money really is.
Ryan Lochte started with so much promise.
He was the cute, down-to-earth swimmer who beat Michael Phelps at the beginning of the Olympics. He seemed like such easygoing guy.
The first sign of trouble was when he tried to wear his American-themed “grill” on the Olympic medal podium. And then came news from his mom that he doesn’t date but instead only has one-night stands.
But now, it looks like Lochte may have outdone himself. He has filed papers to trademark what he calls his catchphrase.
“Ryan Lochte‘s annoying catchphrase ‘Jeah!’ is a friggin’ GOLD MINE,” said TMZ, “at least that’s what the swimmer believes… because he just filed docs to lock up a trademark for the made-up word.”
According to an interview with the swimmer, he made up the word based on one rapper Young Jeezy often uses. According to TMZ, the rapper’s word is actually “Chea!” and he uses it in many songs. Lochte said his version of the word means something “good.”
The website said the trademark filing states that Lochte wants to use the word on “sunglasses, workout DVDs, gift cards, mugs, drinking glasses, trading cards, calendars, posters, swimsuits, swim caps, sports hats and water bottles.”
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said that Lochte applied for the trademark on Aug. 1, according to Yahoo!
The swimmer has already started selling “Jeah” tees, hats and sunglasses on his website.
Young Jeezy has not responded as to whether he will try to fight the filing or if he might even try to take a hint from Lochte and trademark his own word.
Lochte will appear on 90210 soon and may even be up for parts on The Bachelor or Dancing with the Stars.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has not yet approved the patent, even though Lochte is already selling all of his products.
