Sen. John McCain to appear on Parks and Recreation

The new season takes the show to Washington, D.C., with guest appearances by multiple politicians. And those politicians ended up impressing all the actors.

The new season of Parks and Recreation has Leslie Knope following her boyfriend Ben Wyatt as he takes a job in Washington, D.C. The season will feature many D.C. politicos, including one episode with Sen. John McCain.

Amy Poehler, who plays Knope, said the episode will feature Knope in her normal clueless fashion.

“I don’t want to give it away, but he just kind of has a small moment and [Leslie] doesn’t know he’s there,” she told Marc Malkin with E! News. “So, it’s kind of funny because she’s having a moment and he kind of walks through, and she doesn’t really know who she’s talking to.”

Actor Adam Scott, who plays Ben Wyatt on the show, said Sen. McCain did a great job in his cameo.

“He’s so funny… and really nice,” Scott told Malkin. “It was an honor to meet him.”

At the end of season four, the show had Wyatt moving to Washington to pursue his political career. The plot twist was not meant to cut Wyatt out of the show, but to add something new, according to TVLine.

“We want to make it real,” executive producer Michael Schur told TVGuide.com. “We don’t want to have it be that, in the premier, all of a sudden he’s back. That would be pointless. He’s going to be gone for a while.”

Scott said he enjoyed meeting not just McCain, but all the senators who appear in the show this season.

“I have a lot of respect for [McCain] even thought I’m not aligned with him politically,” he added. “I do have a high respect for his service.”

Other politicians that have confirmed appearances this season include Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine and Sen. Barbara Boxer of California.

“They’re really funny,” Scott told Malkin. “They turned the jokes really well.”

The fifth season of Parks and Recreation will premiere on September 20, but many of the Washington scenes are expected to appear in the September 27 episode.
