Embracing a YOLO attitude

YOLO is the acronym for “you only live once,” and the saying recently became extremely popular among teens and young people because of its appearance in Drake’s hit song “The Motto” featuring Lil Wayne.

Pursue your dreams

What is YOLO all about, and why should you embrace this attitude?

Living life to its fullest

The YOLO attitude is about finding the good in people and your life, being truly grateful for what you have and also living each day like it was your last. When embracing the YOLO attitude, you should always treat people with kindness and respect, but also be assertive and willing to speak your mind. Stand behind your values and fight for the things you believe in.

Don’t be afraid to take risks

YOLO is also about pursuing your dreams and being willing to take risks. You have to put yourself out there if you want to reap the rewards of life. Though some people take the YOLO attitude to the extreme — acting foolishly and making rash decisions without considering the consequences — that’s not what the YOLO attitude is truly about. It’s about overcoming your fears and apprehensions, setting high expectations for yourself and going after what you really want.

Katie Couric’s YOLO

We know that Katie Couric has been blessed with a very successful career; however, she’s also experienced some traumatic loss. Couric’s husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer at the age of 42 in 1998. Three years later, her older sister Emily passed away from cancer as well.

Thomas Jefferson said, “The Earth belongs to the living, not the dead,” and Couric has adopted that YOLO philosophy in recent years.

“I read so many books on grief after my husband, Jay, died, but it was this quote from Thomas Jefferson that resonated most. When Jay was very, very sick, he turned to me and said, ‘You know, nothing really matters except your family and your friends.’ Sometimes when I’m on a professional treadmill, I think about what Jay said.”

After 15 years as the host of the Today show, Couric is coming back to television with her own nationally syndicated daytime talk show, Katie. The one-hour show will air weekdays beginning on Monday, Sept. 10 on ABC at 3 p.m. EST. One of the recurring segments on Katie will be about the YOLO attitude.

Couric’s YOLO — the one thing that she’s always dreamed of doing because “you only live once” — is to be a star in a Broadway show. On her website at KatieCouric.com, Couric urges viewers to submit a video of themselves talking about their own YOLO. The fan videos may appear on her show or on her website, and she might even help make your YOLO come true.

Due to Couric’s YOLO attitude, her new daytime talk show promises to bring fresh, thought-provoking content and amazing guests to our televisions on a daily basis.
