The new coaches are only a sign of the success of the current coaches. Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green are taking a break to work on their careers, but they’ll be back soon.
NBC announced today that The Voice coaches Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will be taking a break next spring from the show, and two singers who are just as talented will be taking their places. Usher and Shakira have signed on to coach on the singing competition show.
“The network said Monday that original coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will remain on board,” said the Associated Press. “The series began airing its third season last week.”
Aguilera will be releasing her new album this fall, and many were questioning how she could support the album if she was still on The Voice. NBC confirmed that she was taking a break to tour for the new album.

Green also has a new project in the works, although not a tour. He will be developing a new sitcom based on his life (although he will also be making music).
“Having award-winning artists as coaches means they need to be able to tour,” said executive producer Mark Burnett via Entertainment Weekly. “Whether in the red chair or on tour, our coaches have their chairs for life. This is exactly why, after three seasons, we needed to allow them to rotate out so they can get on the road amongst their fans. Meanwhile, we’re incredibly excited to have singular artists like Usher and Shakira joining the fold.”
The Voice has been a ratings hit since it premiered, and Aguilera and Green can be thanked for a large part of that success.
“The Voice started as a midseason show and then added a fall cycle after posting solid ratings for NBC,” said the AP. “The network’s entertainment chief, Bob Greenblatt, says that created a time crunch for the coaches, and NBC is glad to help Aguilera and Green take time away from the program.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, both Aguilera and Green are expected to return to the coaching panel in fall 2013.
