We highlight our top 2012 Emmy picks for Comedy Series, Drama Series, Reality Program, and Variety Series.
The 2012 Emmys are this Sunday, Sept. 23! To gear up for the major Hollywood event, we highlight our top Emmy picks for Comedy Series, Drama Series, Reality Program, and Variety Series.
Comedy Series
The Bing Bang Theory (CBS)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
Girls (HBO)
Modern Family(ABC)
30 Rock (NBC)
Veep (HBO)
Last year Modern Family took home the Emmy for Best Comedy Series against such contenders like Glee (FOX) and Parks and Recreation (NBC). Yet, the 2012 competition seems much stiffer, with HBO’s Girls receiving plenty of critical acclaim throughout its first season. And while The Bing Bang Theory and 30 Rock were both nominated last year and are perhaps due for a win, both shows’ seasons this year were fairly typical and failed to garner any major buzz like Girls did.
We think its safe to say the competition is strictly between Modern Family and Girls, and that Modern Family will take the 2012 Emmy for Best Comedy Series home this Sunday.
Verdict: Modern Family

Drama Series
Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Breaking Bad (AMC)
Downton Abbey(PBS)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
Homeland (Showtime)
Mad Men (AMC)
This is quite the category of standout shows, with Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, and Downton Abbey the likely top three. Given that Downton Abbey was not a 2011 Emmy nominee for Best Drama Series, we think it’s time the show took home the Emmy. Downton Abbey’s major success in its second season proves it’s a standout show — and besides, Boardwalk Empire has already won in this category twice.
Verdict: Downton Abbey

Reality Program
Antiques Roadshow (PBS)
Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (ABC)
MythBusters (Discovery Channel)
Shark Tank (ABC)
Undercover Boss (CBS)
Who Do You Think You Are? (NBC)
This category showcases a wide range of reality television interests, but given the public’s love of Undercover Boss, the show’s celebration of core values like hard work and success and its penchant for feel-good endings, we think Undercover Boss is destined to take home the 2012 Emmy for Best Reality Program.
Verdict: Undercover Boss

Variety Series
The Colbert Report (Comedy Central)
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central)
Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC)
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (NBC)
Real Time with Bill Maher(HBO)
Saturday Night Live (NBC)
The Variety Series category is one our favorites; each show highlights the best of popular culture and current events — with The Colbert Report, The Daily Showwith Jon Stewart, and Real Time with Bill Maher notably political. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won in 2011 for Best Variety Series.
Real Time with Bill Maher is now in its 10th season, and while it’s been nominated for an Emmy under the Variety Series category each year since 2005 — yes, seven straight years — ithas yet to take home the award. With its ratings at an all-time high, we think it’s time Real Time with Bill Maher won the 2012 Emmy for Best Variety Series.
Verdict: Real Time with Bill Maher
