Within days of each other, two different networks announced specials for the late singer. But only one of them will launch a reality series with the Houston family just days later.
‘Tis the season for Whitney Houston tributes, apparently. Lifetime announced earlier this week it would be airing a special for the singer, called Remembering Whitney.
Then just a few days after Lifetime’s announcement, CBS announced it would be airing a special too. Its special is called We Will Always Love You: A Grammy Salute to Whitney Houston and will be taped Oct. 11 in Los Angeles. CBS grabbed some big names for its special, including Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Usher.
“The Recording Academy announced Thursday that the special will also include Houston’s ‘most memorable performances’ and interviews with various artists,” said the Associated Press. “More performers will be announced.”
The public is invited to attend the CBS special, which will be shot at the Nokia Theater in LA and will air Nov. 16. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
However, the Lifetime special may be one step ahead of CBS’s show. Remembering Whitney will lead into a new reality TV show about the Houston family.
“Lifetime’s special boasts never-before-seen family photos and ‘candid insights’ from Houston family members; those same relatives are starring in Lifetime’s new family reality series The Houstons: On Our Own, debuting days later,” said the Washington Post.
Houston died over six months ago, just hours before this year’s Grammy Awards. Her death was later ruled an accidental drowning, which was complicated by years of cocaine use and heart disease. Houston was only 48 years old when she died but had been performing for decades.
Also coming out is a new compilation album dedicated to the singer. According to the Associated Press, the album, I Will Always Love You — The Best of Whitney Houston, is coming out just before the CBS special, on Nov. 13. Lifetime’s tribute special will air Oct. 17.
