Only a few singers each generation are given the honor of writing a song for a James Bond film, and Adele is the latest. The singer is not taking the honor for granted.
Adele joins the ranks of other singers such as Madonna, Sheryl Crow and Jack White, as she has been given the opportunity to write the next James Bond theme song, Columbia Records announced today. The song for Skyfall will be Adele’s first release since her album 21.
“Adele, 24, who swept the Grammy Awards earlier this year with accolades in six categories, will release the song on Friday on her official website, to coincide with the Bond film franchise’s 50th anniversary and Global James Bond Day,” said Reuters.
While the announcement was just made today about the song, it has been in the works for a while and has already been recorded. Paul Epworth wrote the song with Adele, and according to Reuters, it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London along with a 77-piece orchestra.
“I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for Skyfall,” the singer told Reuters. “There’s a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song.”
She said she decided to write the song after she “fell in love with the script.”
Adele has sold millions of albums, but she still felt that this new project was an honor.
“When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I’ll be backcombing my hair when I’m 60, telling people I was a Bond girl back in the day, I’m sure,” she said. Adele’s song will appear in the 23rd film in the James Bond franchise. Other singers who have performed theme songs in the movies include Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Jack White, and Alicia Keys.
Daniel Craig will be reprising his role as the secret agent in Skyfall, which comes out Nov. 9 in the United States.
