Too Many Pumpkins
by Linda White
(Grade K-2)
Kids will delight in this story about a cranky, but kind-hearted old woman, Rebecca Estelle, who despises pumpkins because when she was a little girl, her family ate nothing else. “Stewed, baked, steamed, mashed, boiled,” you name it, she ate it. So, she vowed she’d never allow a pumpkin in her home. But when a giant pumpkin falls off a truck and smashes into her yard, the adventure begins. Before she knows it, too many pumpkins have sprouted up around her.
Wolves in the Walls
by Neil Gaiman
(Grade 2-4)
The best part of Wolves in the Walls are its spectacular illustrations that will draw a child into the story immediately. This book, written by the New York Times bestselling author of Coraline, is perfect to read on Halloween because of it’s creepy story line. It is about Lucy, who is sure she hears hears noises in her house. “Sneaking, creeping and crumpling sounds” are coming from within the walls of her family’s home that she is absolutely sure are from wolves. Lucy’s suspicions are accurate and wolves do come out of the walls, forcing her family to flee. But it is brave Lucy who returns home to get her pig puppet and talks the others into forcing the animals to leave.
