Some of the most coveted jobs in Hollywood right now are those in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, and one of those spots has finally been filled. Writer Kelly Marcel has been hired to write the screenplay for the film.

Marcel most recently co-wrote the screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks, a story about Walt Disney and the 20 years he spent trying to obtain the rights to Mary Poppins.

“[Saving Mr. Banks] is currently in production at Walt Disney Studios, starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell, with John Lee Hancock directing,” said Gianluca Lignola with Focus Features.

Hanks will be playing Disney in the film.

In March, Universal Pictures bought the rights to the three books in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, and will partner with Focus Features on the project.

“Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character, which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks,” said producer Michael De Luca.

“We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelly’s engagement with the characters and world E.L. James has created, and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,” producer Dana Brunetti added.

Fifty Shades of Grey quickly became a bestseller upon its release in 2011. It follows a 27-year-old billionaire and his relationship with a college student. The follow-up novels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, follow the couple as their relationship develops. The books have been translated into forty-five languages worldwide and have sold over 32 million copies (in print and e-book form) worldwide.

The actors playing the characters in the film have not yet been cast. There have been numerous rumors, including that Ryan Gosling will play Christian Grey and that Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale will play Anastasia Steele, but no one has been confirmed yet. Without a script or any actors, expect it to be at least a few years before the film is ready for release.
