A dark cloud is hovering over Animal Practice. The NBC sitcom has lost its ratings battle, and now its life. The network has confirmed that it has canceled the little comedy that couldn’t.
The fall season has claimed another casualty. First, CBS pulled the plug on its legal drama Made in Jersey, and now NBC is dropping the axe on a show of its own. The peacock network is removing Animal Practice from its schedule. The struggling sitcom is being put out of its misery.

According to EW, the Justin Kirk-led series will be replaced by Whitney, starting next month. After Animal Practice failed to find an audience, NBC had to make an executive decision. The final nail in the coffin came after this week’s ratings surfaced. Animal Practice scraped by with 3.8 million viewers and a 1.0 in the target demo.

Those numbers would be great by CW standards, but this is one of the major networks. Production on Animal Practice will halt after wrapping its eighth episode. Thus far, five have already aired. Whitney officially takes over its time slot on Nov. 14.

Both Whitney and Community were set to debut this Friday, before NBC opted to put them on hold (until an undisclosed date). With Animal Practice getting the axe, it seems odd that the network would pull Whitney from TV purgatory. Neither show is a huge ratings draw, but at least Community has a critical and cult following. This is an interesting move on the network’s part.
