In the world of country music, who was left out of this year’s award nominations? And who was nominated but not for the award they probably should have been nominated for?
This year’s Country Music Awards nomination surprised many. With traditionally non-country artists, such as Kelly Clarkson and even Snoop Dogg (er… Snoop Lion) garnering nominations, the fact that many country music legends were passed up makes us even more interested to see what will happen at the actual show.
Rascal Flatts
This band has been around for years and has been a steady force in the country music scene that entire time. Rascal Flatts‘ most recent album, Changed, peaked at No. 73 on the Billboard album chart. So for a band who received a star this year on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and are working to support that album, no nomination is pretty surprising. They received a CMT Music Award in 2011 for their collaboration with Justin Bieber but have not won a CMA since 2008.
Kellie Pickler
Pickler‘s album 100 Proof was largely ignored by radio, which makes her CMA snub a little more understandable. But the reason this is so interesting is that Kelly Clarkson, a fellow past American Idol, did receive a nomination. Very few people would consider Clarkson country, yet many felt her year was important enough to give her a nomination (for Female Vocalist). Yet Pickler got nothing.
A lot of artists can be considered snubbed even though they were nominated.
Lionel Richie
Richie has the highest-selling country album released in 2012, yet he did not receive an album nod for Tuskegee. The collection was nominated for Musical Event of the Year for “Stuck on You,” his duet with Darius Rucker. But Richie did not receive the coveted Best Album nomination.
Tuskegee was released back in March but is still the No. 24 album on Billboard’s list of country albums.
Host Carrie Underwood did receive a nomination for Female Vocalist but has never earned an Entertainer of the Year Nomination.
“I would argue that Carrie could have been swapped in for any of the Entertainer nominees other than Jason Aldean and [Taylor] Swift (who, whether you like her or not, put on a remarkable tour last year),” said Entertainment Weekly.
