The 2013 CMAs are nearly upon us! Before the country pomp and circumstance gets underway, however, we look back at five of the best moments the awards have had to offer through the years.
Shania Twain wins it for the females (1999)
In 1999, Shania Twain broke a 13-year male winning streak for the coveted Entertainer of the Year award. After a dramatic pause, Reba McEntire pointed to the singer in the audience and called for her to “come on up.” Tears quickly followed.
Sara Evans rocks it live from Madison Square Garden (2005)
The 39th Annual CMA Awards were, for the first time ever, broadcast live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Sara Evans made the most of the opportunity, showing off her pipes by belting out “Born to Fly.”
Faith Hill steals Carrie Underwood’s moment to shine (2006)
Carrie Underwood may have won the coveted Female Vocalist of the Year award in 2006, but all anyone could talk about was Faith Hill‘s ugly reaction. In what was later explained to have been a joke, the songstress threw a hissy fit when her name wasn’t called. Caught on camera, and played repeatedly after the night concluded, Hill‘s reaction quickly became one of the Country Music Awards’ most-unfortunate memorable moments.
Taylor Swift schools country music (2007)
In 2007, at age 17, Taylor Swift made everyone sitting in the audience at the Country Music Awards feel old with nine little words. Accepting the Horizon Award, the songstress gasped out between breaths, “This is definitely the highlight of my senior year!”
Two years later, she went on to become the youngest artist to ever be nominated for — and win — Entertainer of the Year.
Glen Campbell tribute (2011)
2011’s tribute to Glen Campbell proved a moving moment for many at the CMAs, as well as those watching from home. Brad Paisley, Vince Gill and Keith Urban performed a medley of the legendary singer’s biggest hits, while the honoree sat in the audience, silently mouthing to the words he’d sang so many times before.
Months earlier Glen Campbell, now 76, announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert get emotional (2012)
When husband-and-wife team Blake and Miranda won Song of the Year for “Over You,” things got pretty emotional. Not only did Miranda end up in tears (happy tears, of course), but Blake also revealed why they wrote the song: in honor of his late brother and under the advice of his late father.
