The actor is a big fan of the story and has hinted he may be appearing in the movies after visiting the set to watch filming.
Stephen Colbert has never been shy about being a fan of The Hobbit, and it looks like he may have a part in the new Peter Jackson films. He did an interview with Playboy magazine for the November issue and hinted at an appearance.
“I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations,” Colbert told the magazine. “I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I’m a big fan of the films.”
He was then asked by the interviewer if he might actually be in the films, and he replied with “Could be.”
The Hollywood Reporter is saying it has confirmed that Colbert is indeed making a cameo in the story. But for those fans hoping to see him in this year’s release, they will have to wait a little longer. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first film that will be released, on Dec. 14 of this year, but Colbert won’t be in that one. But there is no hint about whether he might be in the second or third film. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug is set to be released Dec. 13, 2013, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will be out July 18, 2014.
Colbert did not hint at what part he might play, but when he answered Playboy’s question, he had been asked if he would be an extra. So even if Colbert is in the films, it’s possible no one will ever see him. And Paste Magazine brings up what may be the most important point: “It isn’t yet known… if he’ll get to put his fluent Elvish to use.”
But it’s also possible the host of the Colbert Report would also look amazing as an elf or a hobbit and might bring a little spice to the film or films.
