Many questioned how the show would go on with so many characters graduating. But they have made it work, and Ryan Murphy opens up about how long he thinks that formula will last.
Glee is now in its fourth season, and some say it could be winding down. But Ryan Murphy has learned how to help the story evolve so that one class of students is not all the show can handle. Last year, many cast members “graduated” high school and had to move on. The story has followed many of them after high school, though, while sticking with the new kids, too.
“I’ve really wanted it to go on, and I wanted to populate it with new people,” Murphy told Perez Hilton. “We did that this season, and thankfully, those kids have popped. It’s re-energized the show.”
He also said the change has created a surprise, positive consequence from the four-year high school stint of cast members — the new storylines have helped add new characters and storylines, so all the actors aren’t working as much.
“I think the actors are all much happier because nobody is having to work eight days a week and kill themselves,” said Murphy. “So I feel like we finally figured out how to make it work.”
But then, Murphy broke the bad news.
“I think we could get another four years from this show,” he said.
While that positivity may sound like good news, for fans, four years may not be enough. In reality, with a rotating cast, the show could go on forever if they really wanted it to. But according to Perez Hilton, the way to go may be spinoffs. Lea Michele was rumored to have been offered one last year, but that story was wrapped back into the Glee plot instead. With so many different, vibrant characters on the show, many Glee cast members could be given spinoffs if Murphy chooses to end the show at any point.
But since the world of high school and music will never end, here’s hoping that Glee won’t ever end, either.
