Best books for dog lovers

November is National Pet Awareness month and what better way to celebrate than to put the spotlight on great books you can read about one of the best pets out there — a dog. If you’re the proud owner of a four-legged pup, you’ll go crazy for three books that remind us of why pooches really are man’s (and woman’s!) best pals.

You Tell Your Dog First
by Alison Pace

Alison Pace has written several fabulous fictional books about dogs (Pug Hill and City Dog, to name just two), but this is her first memoir about man’s BFF. And from the first page, any dog owner out there will be completely engrossed in this page-turner about the ultimate tail-wagger.

You Tell Your Dog First is a collection of humorous and feel-good essays about Alison’s experiences with her own West Highland white terrier, Carlie. From her adventures searching for a dog-friendly apartment in New York City to the tale of Carlie’s dog walker, Fabio, this book is chock full of stories that are just the right blend of humor and heart. Beware: If you don’t already own a dog, you’re going to want one when you finish reading this book!

Following Atticus
by Tom Ryan

This book is the ultimate story of friendship. After his close friend dies of cancer, Tom Ryan comes up with an amazing way of paying tribute to her. He and miniature schnauzer Atticus M. Finch attempt to climb all 48 of New Hampshire’s 4,000-foot peaks twice in one winter while raising money for charity.

This sweet book has so much heart, you’ll be falling in love with Atticus, with Tom, and with the story over and over and over again.

You’ll also be incredibly motivated to get off your rump and do something for someone you love. And if your dog can be a part of it, all the better!

Love at First Bark: How Saving a Dog Can Sometimes Help You Save Yourself
by Julie Klam

I first fell in love with Julie Klam when I read her memoir, You Had Me At Woof: How Dogs Taught Me the Secret to Happiness. (I nearly ran out and rescued a Boston Terrier, too!)

Now, her second heartwarming book, Love at First Bark (how great are her titles, btw?), about dogs that desperately need to be rescued, is out in paperback. Klam shares her own personal stories of finding displaced dogs new homes and how rescuing these pups can help us save ourselves; how helping dogs fight for their survival can so quickly put our own lives in perspective. (Just look at that dog’s face on the cover. How could anything be more important than him? Aww..)
